PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING – March 9, 2004

Sawyer County Courthouse, Assembly Room – 9:00 a.m.

 

Members present: Frank Romnes, Shirley Suhsen, Nate DeLong, Bill Voight and Tom LaCapa. Others present: Ray Boeckman, Brian Cody, Lt. Kurt Barthel, Sherrie Shelton, and Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle

 

Frank Romnes called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

 

Shirley Suhsen moved and Tom LaCapa seconded to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried.

 

Bill Voight moved and Shirley Suhsen seconded to approve the minutes of the February, 2004, meeting as presented. Motion carried.

Veterans Report

Ray Boeckman advised that Arvid Vallem is resigning from the Veteran Service Commission.  Mr. Robert Bryer of Exeland has been recommended to replace Mr. Vallem.

 

Nate DeLong moved and Frank Romnes seconded to forward to the full County Board a recommendation that Arvid Vallem receive a commendation thanking him for his years of service.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Discussion re possibly increasing the size of the Veteran Service Commission to 4 individuals, to include an LCO member.  Ray will check on this and report back to the committee.

 

Shirley Suhsen moved and Bill Voight seconded to forward to the County Board with a recommendation for approval that Mr. Robert Bryer be appointed to the Veteran Service Commission.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Shirley Suhsen moved and Bill Voight seconded to approve out of County travel for Ray Boeckman to attend a CVSO meeting in Park Falls on Friday.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Nate DeLong moved and Bill Voight seconded to approve the Veterans’ vouchers as presented. Motion carried.

Coroner’s Report

Dean Pearson was not present. Nate DeLong moved and Tom LaCapa seconded to approve the Coroner’s vouchers as presented. Motion carried.

Animal Control Report

The Committee reviewed suggested changes to the 1-2002 Animal Control Ordinances.

 

Shirley Suhsen moved and Nate DeLong seconded to approve the changes to the 1-2002 Animal Control Ordinances, with a  written approval from the Sheriff and forward the same to the full County Board.  Motion carried, Nate DeLong voted no.

 

Discussion regarding rates charged at the dog pound.  Sherrie will gather additional information and report back to the Committee in April.

 

Nate DeLong moved and Tom LaCapa seconded to approve the Animal Control vouchers as presented. Motion carried.

 

Discussion re Animal Control Officer on the LCO Reservation.

 

Ambulance Report

Brian Cody reported to the Committee that the Red Cross is putting an office in Hayward.  There has been some Incident Command training given and it has received positive response and also Sawyer County has received an ITS grant  to implement a County wide wireless network.

 

Bill Voight moved and Nate DeLong seconded to approve the Ambulance vouchers as presented.  Motion carried unanimously.

Jail Modification Committee Update

This committee met, looked at several options and decided to do a design build type of program.  RFP’s are being sent out and building will probably not begin until the Spring of 2005.

Sheriff’s Report/Jail Report:

Squad car bids were reviewed. Shirley Suhsen moved and Bill Voight seconded to accept the bid from Ewald Auto for two Ford Explorers.  Motion carried.

 

Tom LaCapa moved and Frank Romnes seconded out of county as presented.   Motion carried.

 

Shirley Suhsen moved and Nate DeLong seconded to approve the sheriff’s department vouchers as presented. Motion carried.

 

Lt. Barthel presented the monthly jail report.

 

Chief Zeigle reported on openings and promotions within the sheriff’s department.

 

Nate DeLong requested monthly statistical information from the Sheriff’s Department re number of cases, number of calls, number of tickets, etc. 

 

Shirley Suhsen moved and Tom LaCapa seconded to go into closed session for the purpose of employee evaluations. Motion carried.

 

Shirley Suhsen moved and Frank Romnes seconded to go into open session.  Motion carried

 

Shirley Suhsen moved and Frank Romnes seconded to adjourn.  Motion carried.
