Sawyer County Ag. Fair Association
Ron Kubarek reported. Fair posters and flyers were distributed; Kubarek stated that Huber workers are cleaning up the Fairgrounds and doing a great job; schedule of events at the Fairgrounds this month was distributed.
Bruce Paulsen inquired regarding Poorman's Racing fees for each event. Kubarek explained that they are also hired as entertainment for the Fair so the fees are mostly a wash. The same carnival is coming back this year; fee scale is the same with a slight increase.
The Fair Board is continuing work on a business plan. One facet of the plan is to increase awareness; a sign will go up at Fairgrounds saying “rent this space”.
Dave Berard, CNRED Agent, and Lisa Wydra, WNEP Coordinator, both reported during the meeting.
Berard briefly summarized his Survey from all county colleagues collecting data on their program area emphasis. The #1 focus area around the state with similar appointments is organizational development. Berard focuses on that as well as there is a need in our county. Berard informed the committee that there are new members elected to LCO Tribal Government; Gordon Thayer is now Chair. Berard will be actively working with the Tribal Board on organization development, at their request. Cleansweep occurs this month. The Winter/Round Lake/Stone Lake collection is Monday, with the Hayward event being Saturday, July 30th. Economic Development - DNR issued a press release that they are in fact closing the Hayward Nursery; target date for closure is 2013.
Wydra updated the committee on the future direction of the WNEP program with the current Federal and State revisions. Lisa’s Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program will focus on nutrition beginning with early age children and childhood obesity. WNEP will be replacing an educator position due to a vacancy. New educator will begin in September; this is a completely state funded position and augments our Sawyer County school WNEP educational program. The Food Pyramid is now replaced with My Plate and will require additional education for school partners on the new initiative.
