Economic Development and Planning Committee

October 11, 2011

Meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman Duffy at 1:30 pm

 

Meeting agenda – Motion by Johnson to approve the agenda, second by Pearson. Motion carried

Minutes of the meeting of September 6, 2011 – Motion by Johnson to approve the minutes of the September 6, 2011 meeting, second by Pearson. Motion carried

Audience recognition – Kathy Hanson from the Sawyer County Record introduced herself

Hayward DNR Forestry Nursery update – Warren Johnson reported that a delegation including DNR, county board, and a tribal representative is going to Red Lake to look at their nursery to gather information. Helwig said that the DNR is pushing for Sawyer County to get clients for the nursery stock.

Forest County resolution regarding the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest – An updated Forest County Resolution number 21 was distributed to the committee by Mayberry. Motion by Johnson, second by Pearson to forward the resolution to the county board with a recommendation for approval. Motion carried.

Indianhead Community Action Agency report, including Community Development Block Grant housing rehabilitation project and request for timeline extension – Carolyn Martin provided a report on behalf of ICAA and the community development block grant. The program was granted an Extension for 7 to 8 emergency projects and were granted approval to do one tribal project.  

Northwest Regional Planning Commission report – Sheldon Johnson provided a feasibility study on biomass for heating county buildings for the committee. John Stroschine has been working with a couple of county businesses regarding application to the revolving loan fund (NWREDF). The regional seed grant for marketing has been approved and the contract has been received. NWRPC has been working on the blowdown and impact of wood that’s been laying on the ground in Burnett County. They are also working on a CWPP wildfires planning protection grant in the Chequemegon Forest. Approximately 1.2 million is currently available for loans in the regional economic development fund (NWREDF).

Sawyer County Economic Development Corporation report – Tom Turngren and Mark Beckman reported on behalf of the Sawyer County Economic Development Corporation. The SCDC is still active and receiving inquiries regarding economic development in the area. Board members are handling web contact and David Berard is returning phone calls to SCDC. The SCDC Executive committee is still functioning and board members are taking on roles as available. The Sawyer County Finance committee has forwarded to the county board a recommendation that the full County board decide on authorizing the last payment to SCDC of $4,687.50. Questions on SCDC plans for staffing and providing continued services. The SCDC board is still working through their future plans. Motion by Johnson that the Economic Development and Planning Committee recommend to the full board authorizing payment of the fourth installment to the Sawyer County Economic Development Corporation. Motion fails for lack of second.

Hayward Area Visitor and Convention Bureau report – Linda Clifford provided a list of free publicity for the area provided this summer. Also the VCB has their fall meeting and elections coming up in October. Clifford updated on activities going on this fall.

Other matters for discussion only, including planning for Superior Days, Stone Lake – John Saunders reported that the Birkie Trail run was successful.

Berard updated the committee on the Superior Days Issue Identification meeting scheduled for October 27,2011
