Public Safety Meeting – January 9, 2007

Assembly Room - Sawyer County Courthouse

 

 

Members present:  Chairperson Pat Aderman, Nate DeLong, Joseph Eichinger, Robert Vitcenda, Fred Zietlow

 

Others present:  Brian Cody, Ray Boeckman, Sheriff Jim Meier, Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle Lt. Kurt Barthel, Mike Gehrke, Richard Hawkins, Coroner Dr. John Ryan

 

Chairperson Pat Aderman called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

 

Joseph Eichinger moved and Robert Vitcenda seconded to approve the agenda as presented.  Motion carried.

 

Robert Vitcenda moved and Joseph Eichinger seconded to approve the minutes of the December 8, 2006, meeting.  Motion carried.

 

Veteran’s Report

 

Pat Aderman explained what information the county board would like concerning evaluation and prioritization of services for each department. 

 

Joseph Eichinger moved and Nate DeLong seconded to approve out of county travel as presented for Ray Boeckman and Mike Petty.  Motion carried.

 

Robert Vitcenda moved and Fred Zietlow seconded to approve the Veterans vouchers as presented.  Motion carried.

 

Coroner’s Report

 

Nate DeLong moved and Fred Zietlow seconded to approve the Coroner’s vouchers as presented.  Motion carried. 

 

Animal Control Report

 

Nate DeLong moved and Robert Vitcenda seconded to approve the animal control vouchers as presented.  Motion carried. 

 

Ambulance Report

 

Brian Cody informed the committee that he would begin to prepare an evaluation and prioritization of department services.

 

Brian Cody informed the committee that a grant application for defibrillators was denied and he is exploring the possibility of leasing the defibrillators.

 

Brian Cody informed the committee that Lifelink III is looking at possibly basing a helicopter unit in Hayward on a fulltime basis.  Other areas being considered are Rice Lake and Shell Lake. 

 

Robert Vitcenda moved and Joseph Eichinger seconded to approve out of county travel for Brian Cody as presented.  Motion carried.

 

Joseph Eichinger moved and Robert Vitcenda seconded to approve the ambulance/emergency government vouchers as presented.  Motion carried. 

 

Sheriff’s Report

            

Joseph Eichinger moved and Robert Vitcenda seconded out of county travel for the sheriff’s department as presented.  Motion carried.

 

Robert Vitcenda moved and Joseph Eichinger seconded to approve the Sheriff’s Department vouchers as presented.  Motion carried.

 

Nate DeLong moved and Robert Vitcenda moved to approve the jail report as presented by Lt. Barthel.  Motion carried.

 

Sheriff Meier informed the committee that personnel from the Department of Corrections will be conducting an inspection of the new jail on Tuesday, January 16, 2007, and the new facility will open on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, if everything is approved.    

 

Sheriff Meier presented a letter to the committee from the Department of Corrections to Treasurer Ince concerning holds reimbursements paid by the State of Wisconsin to Sawyer County.  Sheriff Meier expressed concern that Sawyer County was paid $31.94 per person for probationers and parolees who were held in the Sawyer County Jail, which is down from the $36.28 rate paid for the prior year due to budget issues.  Sheriff Meier informed the committee that pursuant to Wisconsin Statute, Sawyer County should be receiving $40.00 per person.  Committee members felt this should be addressed with the full county board at their next meeting.

 

Other Matters for Discussion:

 

Coroner Ryan informed the committee that he will be attempting to accumulate data regarding ATV and snowmobile accidents. 

 

Discussion was held about the number of burglaries in Sawyer County and recidivism of the offenders.

 

Motion by Robert Vitcenda, seconded by Joseph Eichinger to go into closed session pursuant to Wis. Stat. 19.85(1)(c) for the evaluation of department employees at 10:00 a.m.  Motion carried.
