Public Safety Meeting – February 8, 2008

Human Services Conference Room - Sawyer County Courthouse

 

 

Members present:  Nate Delong, Bill Voight, Fred Zietlow, Bob Vitcenda

 

Others present:  Ray Boeckman, Brian Cody, Warren Johnson, Terrell Boettcher

 

Zietlow called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

 

Vitcenda moved and Voight seconded to approve the agenda as presented.  Motion carried.

 

DeLong moved and Vitcenda seconded to approve the minutes of the January 9, 2008, meeting.  Motion carried.

 

Veteran’s Report

 

Vitcenda moved, and DeLong seconded to approve out of county travel for Ray Boeckman and the assistant CVSO to attend a Northwest CVSO meeting in Mondovi on March 7, 2008.  Motion carried. 

 

There was discussion regarding the Veterans’ Clinic.  Ray advised that they are planning to reopen in February.

 

Coroner’s Report

 

Vitcenda moved and DeLong seconded to approve the Coroner’s vouchers as presented.  Motion carried.

 

Mr. Voight advised that he would like to see a monthly report from the Coroner.

 

Sheriff Meier entered.

 

Animal Control

 

Voight moved and Vitcenda seconded to approve the Animal Control vouchers as presented.  Motion carried. 

 

Mr. Zietlow advised that the recent training held at the LCO Casino was excellent and well attended.

 

Dr. Ryan entered.

 

Ambulance Report

 

Brian Cody advised there were a lot of ambulance runs in January.  He also reported that six new EMTs passed their class and are taking runs.

 

Brian Cody informed the committee that the new ambulance has been ordered.

 

Chief Deputy Zeigle entered.

 

Vitcenda moved and DeLong seconded to approve the ambulance/emergency government vouchers.  Motion carried.

 

Brian Cody has no out of county travel.

 

Dr. Ryan handed out a report to the committee.  After some discussion, it was discovered that Dr. Ryan has been handing in the report all along, but this report has not been included in the voucher packet for the committee’s review.  Rose will speak with the Clerk’s Office so that the report will be included in the future.

 

Discussion regarding Wisconsin Coroner and Medical Examiner Child Death Review Training.

 

Sheriff’s Report:

 

Sheriff Meier advised the committee of a letter he received from the Town of Hayward regarding fireworks complaints.  After discussion, the committee advised Sheriff Meier to write a letter to the Town of Hayward advising them that the Public Safety Committee has no interest in pursuing a county-wide ordinance in this matter.

 

Discussion was held regarding inter-departmental transfer of vehicles.  After discussion, it was decided to have this item placed on the Finance Committee agenda and the County Board agenda so that a policy can be developed.

 

Vitcenda moved and DeLong seconded to approve out of county travel for the sheriff’s department as presented.  Motion carried.

 

Vitcenda moved and DeLong seconded to approve the sheriff’s department vouchers.  Motion carried.

 

Mr. DeLong advised that Patrice Brousard, the receptionist at the sheriff’s department, does a great job and is always very helpful. 

 

Sheriff Meier advised the committee that the jail’s back-up systems worked fine during the gas outage and that the jail is averaging 62 inmates per day.

 

Mr. Voight advised that Deputy Sanchez is doing a great job with snowmobile patrol in the Winter area. 

 

Dr. Ryan provided some statistics to the committee regarding traffic deaths and alcohol and asked what could be done to curb the amount of alcohol-related deaths in Wisconsin.  Sheriff Meier advised that the sheriff’s department has received a $10,000.00 grant to do some enforcement throughout 2008 but funding and manpower is always an issue when it comes to enhanced enforcement.

 

Zietlow moved and DeLong seconded to approve the sheriff’s department vouchers as presented.  Motion carried. 

 

DeLong moved and Vitcenda seconded to adjourn.  Motion carried.
